Her parents stayed the day and left on the evening train. As her mother was leaving Kurt called out to her.
âStephanie.â His voice was weak but unwavering.
Her mother turned to face him, surprised by the sudden seriousness in his tone.
Kurt took a deep breath, his eyes never leaving Stephanieâs. âWhen your mother and I divorced, I didnât fight for custody for you because I thought it was for the best. She knew how to love you, do the best for you, and I was no good at any of that. I just didnât know how toâ¦â His voice trailed off before he coughed and continued, âBut I want you to know, you did nothing wrong.â
Stephanieâs eyes welled up with tears. âThank you, Dad,â she said, her voice barely above a whisper. âBut weâre here now, and thatâs all that matters.â
Kurt offered a weary smile. âYes, we are. And Iâm grateful to Livi for contacting me and I would like to stay in touch.â
Livi watched the exchange and, even though it was brief, she could sense a lifetime of regret and sorrow in her grandfatherâs eyes.
In the corridor Stephanie, her eyes clouded with emotion, said goodbye to Livi.
âAre you sure youâll be okay staying here with him?â
Livi gave her motherâs hand a reassuring squeeze. âIâll be fine, Mum. I want to be here.â
Stephanie hugged her tightly. âThank you, Olivia. Iâm proud of you. Youâve been making some brave decisions lately. And itâs good to see.â
Livi watched as her mother disappeared down the hallway. She knew this wouldnât be easy, but she was determined to be there for her grandfather, no matter what.
